Botox treatment is becoming increasingly popular, and with good reason. It is currently the most common aesthetic procedure performed in the US.

Botox can be used to smooth wrinkles in the neck and face to create a more youthful appearance. It is especially useful in the eye area. Removing wrinkles from between the eyes can dramatically change a person’s look from one of permanent anger or sadness to one of contentment and restedness.
It cannot improve the overall texture of the skin, nor can it tighten the skin. Procedures such as laser skin resurfacing and dermabrasion can be used to accomplish this

What is Botox?
Botox is a purified protein derived from the bacterium, Clostridium Botulinum. The brand Botox is produced in controlled laboratory conditions and given in extreme small doses.

How does Botulinum Toxin work?
Normally your brain sends electrical messages to your muscles so that they can contract and move. The electrical message is transmitted to the muscle by a substance called acetylcholine. The botulinum toxin works to temporary block the release of acetylcholine and as a result, the muscle doesn’t receive the message to contract. This means that the muscle spasms stop or are greatly reduced.

What can Botulinum Toxin be used for?
Botulinum toxin was originally introduced for the safe and effective treatment of muscle spasms in adults and in children. Most commonly for cerebral palsy, migraine and strabismus.
It can successfully reduced central frown lines, (caused by concentrating, squinting or frowning) crow’s feet, bunny lines and smokers lines. It is also very successful at reducing excessive sweating for example in the armpits or on the palms.

How is Botulinum Toxin administered?
Tiny quantities of the toxin are injected with a very fine needle, directly into the affected muscle. It takes three to five small injections between the eyebrows to treat the frown line for example. Treatment may take between 10 to 20 minutes depending on the number of injections.

Does the treatment hurt?
A very fine needle is used for the injections. There is a slight discomfort involved with the injections. The feeling has been likened to an insect bite. After the procedure, there is virtually no pain.

What are the risks?
Mild bruising or swelling may occur at the site of the injection. The treatment may also cause a brief headache. In rare cases, the injections may cause the eyebrow or upper eyelid to droop, but this condition is temporary and corrects itself without treatment within 2 – 3 weeks.

What can I expect afterward?
The result of the procedure is generally visible within 3 to 5 days and reaches a peak at 1 to 2 weeks post treatment. Although the results may vary, each individual treatment last for about 4 to 6 months. The procedure may be repeated and with each new treatment, the result tends to last longer.

How long can I be treated with Botulinum Toxin?
Treatment can typically be repeated as long as the patient continues to respond and does not have serious allergic reactions.
Botox has been used for over 10 years commercially worldwide, and acceptable safety in long-term treatment has been well established.

With age the thickness of our skin on the face and the tissues beneath it become thinner. Replacing this volume with fillers is a very effective rejuvenation technique. We use the safest dermal fillers available and these are mostly complex carbohydrate molecules that plump the skin

These natural molecules exist normally within the skin and have become the dermal filler of choice for dermatologists and plastic surgeons world-wide. They are fully degradable complex carbohydrate molecules which have been used nationally and internationally for several years now with an outstanding safety record. Common areas to fill are the lips, cheeks, and lower face in general.

What You Should Know About Wrinkle Fillers

Injectable wrinkle fillers can give you a more youthful look for a fraction of what a traditional facelift costs. Most will fill lines and wrinkles in less than 30 minutes with results that can last from 4 months to more than a year.
Injectable wrinkle fillers, unlike Botox injections that relax the muscle under a wrinkle, fill the line, crease, or area with one of several different substances. As a result, trouble spots nearly disappear.
Wrinkle fillers can also be used as “volumizers,” plumping and lifting cheeks, jawlines, and temples; filling out thin lips, and plumping sagging hands.

What areas respond the best to treatment?
Lip enhancement is the most popular application of fillers. In addition lines on the upper and lower lip smooth and fill nicely with this product. Deeper wrinkles and folds in the cheek areas (nasolabial, melolabial and lines at the corners of the mouth) are the next most popular site for filler use. Other areas treated include the cheeks, under the eyes, jawline and acne scars. These fillers can also be use as a non-surgical rhinoplasty (‘nose job’) in certain suitable patients.

What do treatments involve?
The treatment is performed by injecting the clear gel under your skin. The procedure can usually be done in less than one hour. Many patients like the added comfort provided with an anesthetic cream, while others prefer an anesthetic block. This makes the treatment relatively painless.

How long does it last?
Depending on the area treated, most folds and wrinkles require maintenance or repeat treatment. The product lasts in the skin for 6 to 12 months before being naturally dissolved.

How will I look after my treatment?
Following your injections, normal activities can be resumed immediately. Discomfort is minimal although there is often some tenderness in the injected area for 2 or more days. The treatment site will usually have some swelling, although this often is not noticed by others. Lips are more prone to this transient swelling than other areas.
